A Note from the EditorDuring the time between beginning college freshman year... and graduating four years later… The only thing that remains constant is change. Entering into its 115th year, Cactus remains a pictorial record of change. Not only does it encompass student life at the university, Cactus has also changed throughout the years. Gone are the days of a mere 100 page, black and white printing and Senior Class Poetry. Gone, even, are the days of heavy, leather-bound volumes reaching 500 pages. Encased in the pages of today's Cactus is something newer. Fresher. Different. The current staff and current Cactus yearbook are shedding new light on The University of Texas and what it means exactly to be a student at this fine university. In it's 115th edition, Cactus will highlight the changes which abound during those years frequently labeled as ‘the best of your life' – the college years. Cactus will remain on the forefront of college yearbooks and continue to bring you cutting edge design and vibrant photography. Although routine can prove useful, Cactus would be shorting itself and you, our audience, if we never changed. Thus, keeping with our theme "The only thing constant is change," the staff has decided to include portraits of graduating seniors once again. The "Senior Section" will also contain Graduation-related content covering such events as the Champagne Toast. This year's book will also contain a supplemental DVD, but its coverage will be expanded to include archives from The Daily Texan, as well as content from TSTV, UT's student-run television station. Last year, the Editor informed UT that the Cactus' transformation could not be made overnight. The 114th edition was phenomenal, but there is always room for improvement. This being said, the 115th edition will not only be the best UT has seen, but also the best in the country. Despite our promises and despite our ideas, the fact of the matter is Cactus exists for you. For students. For the UT community. You are our audience and the one we strive to impress. Our staff always aims to make the most out of the limited space we have and we welcome any comments and suggestions to further better the content of our publication. Please, e-mail me anytime at eleanor.bartosh@gmail.com with comments or suggestions. Thank you for your continued support of the Cactus! Love, cheers and Cactus, Eleanor Bartosh Cactus yearbook Editor-In-Chief About the YearbookThe Cactus Yearbook is in its 115th year of publication, making it the oldest publication at The University of Texas at Austin. For over a century, we have not only documented the history of the University but also the college experience. We show how the campus has grown from its original 40 acres when it consisted of one building, eight teachers, two departments and 221 students to a campus of over 350 acres, 50,000 students and more than 20,000 faculty and staff. With our photography, we try to document a campus that is not only the largest in the country but one that is as diverse as it is beautiful. With more than 775 organizations on campus, including more than 50 sororities and fraternities students have the opportunity to find a place where he or she can feel at home. We are the timekeeper of traditions: Bevo, Torchlight Parades, Hex Rallies, Big 12 Championships and the lighting of the Tower. They are all part of what makes UT so unique, and they are all highlighted each year in the Cactus Yearbook. |
